Gastric bypass
The Roux-en-Y bypass, or simply gastric bypass, is considered the gold standard of weight loss surgery and has been performed for more than 50 years. In this surgery, a small pouch is created by dividing the top of the stomach from the rest of the stomach. Then, the small pouch is connected to the small intestine, bypassing the divided stomach. With this small pouch, people feel full with less food. In addition, rerouting food produces changes in gut hormones that promote a feeling of satisfaction, suppress hunger and reverse one of the primary ways obesity contributes to type 2 diabetes.
Duodenal Switch
One of the most effective surgical weight loss options, the duodenal switch essentially combines a sleeve gastrectomy and a gastric bypass. Your RUSH bariatric surgeon can discuss the risks and benefits of this procedure to help you decide if a duodenal switch is best for your unique weight loss goals.
Gastric sleeve
Also called vertical sleeve gastrectomy, the gastric sleeve has become the most popular weight loss surgery. In this procedure, 80 percent of the stomach is removed, creating a small tube or sleeve shape. This reduces the amount of food a person can consume at one time, leading to weight loss. Sleeve gastrectomy may also produce hormonal changes that decrease hunger.
